i'm whoopee for whoopie pies!

If you haven't had one, you must!  Although no one is sure where they originated, Maine stakes claim to it.  They have two moist cake like mounds held together by yummy filling.  It's the.....
 Whoopie Pie!!!

and Dover-Foxcroft, Maine played host to the 2nd annual Whoopie Pie festival in Maine.  For a nominal fee, you could get into the festival.  You could get 5 chips for $1 and each chip would get you a tasting.  Sean and I shared 14 tastings!  Don't worry, we didn't eat 14 total pies.  They really were a tasting - one tasting was just the right size for each of us to have a bite.

I don't think they were ready for the line of people wanting to get into the festival.  There ended up being 3500 people there throughout the day.  I'm so glad we got there early so we left before all the madness.

Here's a partial list of whoopie pies we tasted:
  • original brownie
  • oatmeal
  • peppermint
  • pumpkin
  • maple syrup
  • red velvet
  • banana bread
  • peanut butter
  • blueberry (x2)
  • woofie pie that Sean even tried
  • 3 others that are escaping me - guess they didn't leave an impression, good or bad
All, except the peppermint, were very good but the blueberry one was the absolute best one.  It was from a lady that doesn't even have a business doing it.  The cake part was blueberry and then the filling had big, juicy, whole blueberries in it.  I'm going to try to make these myself once it's blueberry season.

They had whoopie pie eating contests (the kid in the green won)...

They had giant whoopie pies...

They had plates full of whoopie pies...

They even had woofie pies (yes the festival was Duke friendly - even better!, look how tiny they are next to this business card)...

They also had whoopie pie martinis...

We had such a great time but were feeling quite ill by the time we left.  It wasn't long before we crashed from our sugar high and couldn't get enough salt to help counter the sweet.  I can't wait for next year's festival!!!

UPDATE:

It appears not all the squirrels are too fat for the picnic table.
