mom's visit

mom made the trek up to visit us again

she hadn't been up since the wedding

it was so great having her there

and getting to spend time together

especially having her there on my birthday!

we took sunset wine cruises

saw new sites in deer isle, maine

went antiquing

walked a mile out to see a lighthouse

saw a play and a went to a wine dinner

wrecked the atv with her on the back

which also wrecked her camera

rode the train

hit up her favorite place - bar harbor

she also did lots of relaxing on the day beds

all in all, it was a great visit and we can't wait for her to come back!

the BIG birthday month celebration - week 3

this birthday month is becoming the most memorable one ever - and not all in a good way!

day 15 - attended a home brew beer tasting to benefit our friend that was injured in an ATV accident

day 16 - took time to blog again!

day 17 - i cannot for the life of me remember what i did - must have been good or relaxing - maybe i just vegged and caught up on trash tv...

day 18 - attended a taping of the local late night talk show - won a new beer glass and a gift card to a local restaurant!  was totally my night!

day 19 - attended a wine tasting and found some new whites i like - who knew i could like white wine?

day 20 - went tent camping with my honey and duke and friends - sat around the campfire, giggling about old days enjoying the crisp fall air and great company

day 21 - went on a 75 mile 4-wheeling trip, enjoying all the fall colors and cool fall temperatures.  the part that was not enjoyable (and i wouldn't recommend as part of a birthday month celebration) was the trip to the er after wrecking the wheeler.  i'm really not sure how i came out of it with nothing broken but i did.  i'm pretty banged up with bruises and whiplash but nothing broken and already on the mend! special thanks to the er nurse that made me feel comfortable while in an area i'm not familiar with and who recognized that our appearance after a day of wheeling isn't what we normally look like!

spring is "mud season" in maine
which means big time fun on the atvs

i also took time during the breaks to snap some pics of the beautiful maine countryside

thinking back about the situations i got myself into i question why i took my real camera!
i just couldn't get over this tree all toppled over

i was told a beaver did it
isn't that amazing?!?!
now, i don't always believe what they're telling me
cuz they tried to tell someone that moose hibernate - HA!

camping in the cold

for my birthday month we went on a camping trip
you know the kind
where you pitch a tent, cook on the open flame and everything
the trip included 4-wheelin', of course

and duke went, of course

we wheeled for 90 miles in one day
there are so many trails - you can even go to canada
the trails are awesome
and they're legit - with street signs and all

it was FABULOUS!
and the scenery was AMAZING!

but the night was COLD!
we're talking 39 degrees...and we weren't ready for that
but i'd do it again in a heartbeat!

we found out that duke hearts 4-wheelin'
like really hearts it
he can even "load up" onto it (aren't you impressed lizzy?)
he wants to ride it to go get the mail
or go to the neighbors
or really anywhere
oh wait, that's sean...
but duke always wants to go along
we tried him out on a short, evening trip first
he didn't care too much for it when it sprinkled
but he didn't mind the big puddles

but maybe that's cuz we were nice to him and went slow
his favorite is to ride with the driver
and put his paws on the gas tank
and pretend like he's driving

and before you leave me nastygrams about how concerned you are for him
he's probably safer than we are
as we have a harness and leash that we wrap around us
and latch to him - he's ALL good!

turtle laying

every year the snapping turtles can be found hunting around for a place to lay their eggs
the other morning sean was riding around on the atv, just cuz
and was hollering at me that they were back and in the driveway
still in my jammies I grabbed my camera and hopped on the back for sean to drive me to them
you know, the driveway is so far away...
there she was, right in the middle of the drive
waiting for me to take her picture finding a very special place for her babies

i promptly assumed the position - sprawling out on the ground
figuring i could move faster that her even laying on my stomach
and she let me get pretty close

close enough to see she had hitchhikers
what are these things anyway?  (elizabeth???)

luckily i didn't make her nervous
aka she didn't try to snap my arm in half
sean says they can snap a broomstick right in half with one bite
i hope i never see that or i'll probably never get in a lake again
