pink floyd junkie

My husband is a Pink Floyd junkie.  If you were to listen to his ipod you would probably get as tired of hearing Pink Floyd song after Pink Floyd song after Pink Floyd song like I do.  Some I can tolerate, some, not so much.  He even made me watch the movie "The Wall".

Let's talk about that movie for a moment.  I totally don't get it.  Maybe it's because I didn’t do enough drugs when I was younger - or any for that matter.  I seriously think you need to be on drugs to get it.  Sean claimed analyzing it in school ruined the movie for him.   For me, I think I may like it better if I had that class.

Now, how about watching The Wizard of Oz while listening to Pink Floyd?   I tried that once - kinda cool.  Wait until the second roar of the lion though.  We used to have PITH parties when we would travel for work.  What's a PITH party you ask?   Party In The Hotel.   At some point, after travelling so much, we got tired of eating out and hitting the bars so a small group of us started PITH parties.  We would get together in someones hotel room (usually someone with status that got upgraded) and play cards (oh the cheating that would go on) or watch a movie (23 brings back some fond memories, and then finding 23 in just about everything for about a week afterwards) or something.

One time, in Chicago actually (maybe even the room I stayed in this week), I brought my copy of The Wizard of Oz and someone (probably Sean) brought the Pink Floyd CD and we tried it out.

So let me get back to the point of this post.  When Sean's brother was in town, all the grown-ups went to see Roger Waters.  You're probably saying to yourself what I did - who's Roger Waters?  Apparently he was part of Pink Floyd at one point.   He had a concert; however, it was more of a musical than a concert.  I was actually wondering how he was going to fill the venue it was at, but he did somehow.  Look at all the people in line for merchandise!

It was visually very amazing.  Singing - there wasn't any - he was not singing at all.  There were words, but not his, maybe from back in the day, but not that night.  During the whole thing they built a wall and then crashed it down at the end.  That was definitely cool.

Let me leave you with this...TEACHERS - LEAVE THOSE KIDS ALONE!!!

muskrat love?

It's so funny how conversations can change so quickly.
One minute you're driving in the car passing a road called "Mustang Run".
This turns into Mustang Sally and then somehow Muskrat Love.
Amy somehow made it through live having never heard the song.
So of course I had to find it for her because it's such an awesome song (insert sarcasm here).
In case you're like Amy you too can listen to it right here!
Don't skip the intro though - we were rolling on the floor.
Makes me sad to be from Texas.

Of course I've never really paid attention to the lyrics until that night.
They're quite humorous - check them out here (link to lyrics).
I didn't think Captain and Tennille could go wrong - but they definitely did with this one!

If you didn't find this funny then maybe you need a couple of margaritas first.  That seemed to help us!  I'm pretty sure that song is now permanently implanted in Amy's head.  How about yours?

Trippin' with Floyd

Pink Floyd that is, and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.  Sean is a huge fan of Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin and really enjoys the orchestral rendentions.  I walked down the isle at the wedding to the orchestral rendetion of Stairway to Heaven if that tells you anything.  So when I saw the DSO was having a one night only "The Music of Pink Floyd" I just knew I had to take him.

As the sun was setting we headed to pick up Elizabeth on our way downtown.  Of course Sean had to have Pink Floyd blasting on the ipod.

The concert was at the Meyerson.  I hadn't been to an event there before but knew it was really nice - and I wasn't disappointed.  The organ on the back wall was georgous!!!

When did going to the orchestra become casual?  There were so many people in jeans and even someone in booty shorts and knee high socks.  Oh and I have to mention the woman breastfeeding in the chair right in front of us with no blanket or anything.  I just don't get it.  Here we are - all dressed up and waiting for the show to begin.

It was also a laser light show.  I think the concert hall was too big for the smoke machine so it made the light show a little weak.  This is a fun picutre though cuz you can see the lights and the orchestra.

Here's the set list (most of which Sean told me the song with the very first note of the song):
  • Dogs of War - this song started out with all the gnarley dogs growling and stuff - cool way to start
  • Breathe
  • Time
  • Learning to Fly
  • Wish You Were Here
  • Nobody Home - I had never heard this one before
  • One Slip - I had never heard this one either and I wish the guy hadn't sung to it
  • Money - I wish he hadn't sung to this one either - the orchestral part was so cool
  • Intermission
  • Is Anybody Out There Interlude
  • Hey You
  • The Wall - they had some people from the audience get up on the stage and sing with them
  • Us & Them
  • Signs of Life - I hadn't heard this one before; there was no vocals and I really liked this one!
  • On the Turning Away
  • Dark Side of the Moon
  • Comfortably Numb
  • Run Like Hell
Probably my favorite line of the night was when Sean leaned over to me and said "Finally songs you don't know all the words to".  How true that is but I'm getting there with them since Sean plays them so dang much!

Am I getting old?

Having spent the summer in Maine I feel out of it when it comes to music. When we're up there we have to listen to Sean's music most of the time and it doesn't take any time at all to get anywhere. Here in Dallas it takes 30 minutes to get anywhere, which gives you plenty of time to listen to some music. On the down side, you seem to hear the same 5 songs each 30 minutes you're driving around.

Now that I'm back in Dallas I can't seem to find a station I can stand listening to. Music is just not doing it for me these days and for those of you that know me well, that's really strange. I just don't get some of the music. What happened to people actually being able to sing and not just synthesized? It makes me wonder if some of these people really can sing at all. I guess that's why I like the singers that have come out of American Idol. You've actually heard them with no background music at all and know they actually have a voice. I don't always agree with the voting as it's more a popularity contest instead of voting on their talent. Case in point - Sanjaya, David Archuleta and Kellie Pickler.

But if this is the type of music our youth are attracted to it's no wonder I'm not getting it these days. Let's talk about stuff that's currently on the radio. Lady Gaga or should we say Lady Gag-a. Same sound over and over. Britney - although I like her beats, that newest song I can't even understand what she's saying because she's so synthesized these days. The only thing I can understand is "One, two, three...." How about that firefly song? I think someone was seriously on something when they wrote that. Also, why must the radio overplay absolutely EVERYTHING????? I think they just pick the most popular 5 songs and just play them on repeat all day.

So I'm looking for a way to find music I like. My friend Susan told me about this thing called Pandora where it essentially customized your own radio station for you based on music you like. I actually found an app for my new Blackberry Bold where I can get this on my phone. The sound is actually really good. I'm going to give it a try and see how it goes. It seems you can give a song a thumbs up or down and then it starts customizing your station. I'll let you know how it works out for me. Thanks for telling me about this Susan!!!
